The IT40 operates across three distinct sessions. Pre-Market runs from 01:15 to 07:00 UTC, covering Asian trading hours when European participation is minimal. The Regular session opens at 07:00 UTC — coinciding with the official Borsa Italiana open — and closes at 15:30 UTC. This window aligns with peak European activity. The Extended session then carries trading from 15:30 to 22:00 UTC, overlapping with the New York afternoon. According to market microstructure research, index CFDs tend to mirror the liquidity patterns of their underlying cash markets, meaning the Regular session dominates in terms of volume and price discovery for the FTSE MIB.

Peak liquidity on the FTSE MIB concentrates between 07:00 and 11:00 UTC — that is 08:00–12:00 CET, or 03:00–07:00 EST. The Milan open at 08:00 CET generates the day's first major volume surge, often producing the sharpest intraday moves. A second liquidity window emerges around 13:30–15:30 UTC when US pre-market activity begins influencing European indices ahead of the New York open.
