USDCAD trades from 22:00 UTC Sunday through 22:00 UTC Friday, giving you a continuous five-day window. But continuous doesn't mean equal. The Sydney session (22:00–07:00 UTC) and Tokyo session (00:00–09:00 UTC) generate almost no meaningful USDCAD flow. Neither the US nor Canadian economy has significant overlap with Asia-Pacific hours, so price drifts in thin, choppy ranges. The London session opens at 08:00 UTC and starts injecting volume — European banks take positions in USD crosses as their trading day begins. The real action, though, is the New York session from 13:00 to 22:00 UTC. This is where USDCAD lives. The overlap between London (08:00–17:00 UTC) and New York (13:00–22:00 UTC) — specifically 13:00 to 17:00 UTC — concentrates the highest daily volume into a four-hour window.

The single best trading window for USDCAD is 13:00–17:00 UTC, which translates to 9:00 AM–1:00 PM Eastern Time. This is not a coincidence — it maps directly to the New York open and the period when both London and New York desks are simultaneously active. Canadian economic data, including GDP releases, employment figures, and Bank of Canada rate decisions, almost always drops at 13:30 UTC. US data like Non-Farm Payrolls and CPI hits at the same time. Both economies reporting simultaneously during peak liquidity creates the sharpest, cleanest directional moves of the day. Since 2022, the Bank of Canada's aggressive rate cycle has made these release windows even more volatile, with 80–120 pip moves on major data days becoming routine. Outside this window, 15:30–16:30 UTC (WM/Reuters fix) also sees a secondary liquidity spike worth watching for short-term setups. Avoid trading USDCAD between 22:00 and 08:00 UTC unless you have a specific overnight strategy — the risk/reward math simply doesn't favor it.
