Palladium Trading Hours: Best Sessions for XPDUSD

XPDUSD runs across three overlapping sessions. The Asian session opens at 23:00 UTC and runs through 08:00 UTC — this covers Tokyo and Sydney hours. The European session follows from 08:00 to 16:00 UTC, bringing London market makers online. The American session runs 13:00–22:00 UTC, covering New York and Chicago participants.

Unlike gold, which sees strong Asian demand from Chinese physical buyers, palladium's price action is dominated by industrial demand — primarily automotive catalytic converters. That shifts the center of gravity firmly toward European and American hours, where auto sector news, mining output data from South Africa and Russia, and futures activity on the NYMEX drive the most meaningful moves. The Asian session, compared to the other two, is noticeably quieter for XPDUSD.

The single best window for palladium is the European-American overlap: 13:00–16:00 UTC (9:00–12:00 AM Eastern, 14:00–17:00 CET). During this three-hour window, both London and New York desks are active simultaneously, generating the highest order flow and tightest conditions.

The American session alone (13:00–22:00 UTC) is the second-best option. NYMEX palladium futures open at 13:20 UTC, and that futures open frequently triggers sharp directional moves in the spot market — in 2023, several 3%+ intraday swings originated within the first 30 minutes of NYMEX open.

Avoid the late Asian session between 02:00–06:00 UTC. Volume drops sharply, and price can drift erratically on thin order books. Whereas gold maintains reasonable liquidity through Asian hours due to physical demand, palladium simply lacks that regional buyer base.

Spreads on XPDUSD widen significantly outside peak hours — a pattern more pronounced here than in gold or silver. During the European-American overlap, spreads on major brokers typically sit in the $0.50–$1.50 range per troy ounce. Outside that window, particularly during the mid-Asian session (01:00–05:00 UTC), spreads can balloon to $3.00–$6.00 or more, effectively eating into any short-term trade thesis.

The Sunday open at 23:00 UTC deserves special caution. The first 30–60 minutes after the weekly open often carry elevated spreads as liquidity rebuilds from the weekend gap. Compared to the London open on Monday morning, Sunday night fills can cost 2-4x more in spread.
